Self-esteem is at the crossroads of self-image, self-love and acceptance. It is a notion that refers to the value that one has of oneself. It is a value judgment that we make on ourselves. I discuss this in more detail in the article “What Is Self-Esteem?

But why is it important to have high self-esteem? Why would anyone try to develop their self-esteem?

Today I’m sharing with you the 7 main reasons (but there are plenty more) why it is important to improve your self-esteem.

1. Make better decisions

By improving your self-esteem, you will be better able to make better choices for yourself and for your life in general.

Having high self-esteem comes down to having your own self-worth all the time. So when making decisions, you will know which situation brings you the best for your progress and your well-being. You will base your decisions on a gain in value, not a loss. You then improve your body-mind-soul alignment at the same time.

So, no regrets in the future because you know why you made your choices in the past: out of respect for yourself and your value.

2. Have a better entourage

People around you may not always be aware of your intrinsic worth. Because perhaps they themselves have not yet realized their own worth.
I am thinking in particular of people who could find themselves in an environment with a dangerous influence for well-being and health (drugs, violence, etc.). This can also be the case on a psychological level, for example a family that has a state of mind where fear, abandonment, and cynicism reign.

By realizing your own worth, by improving your self-esteem, out of love for yourself, you will know when to distance yourself from someone who does not recognize your worth. You will know how to show love for yourself and choose who to surround yourself with to move forward on the path to your personal success.

3. Avoid reliving humiliating and degrading situations

Over the past 10 years, I have improved a lot in self-esteem. I realized my worth, what I had to bring to the world. I have learned to love and accept myself as I am. I still work on it every day because self-esteem is never acquired, it has to be nourished.

But improving my self-esteem allowed me to open my eyes to toxic and sometimes humiliating situations in which I had immersed myself in the past. As well in the family sphere, as professional or in couple relations.

I know now that my self-esteem allows me to spot toxic relationships or situations more quickly. It is my self-esteem that prevents me from reliving these situations because I love myself enough not to inflict them on myself again.

Bottom Line: Improving your self-esteem will allow you to break repetitive neurotic and toxic pattern cycles.

4. Save time and save energy

High self-esteem helps you sort through your life.

You no longer waste time in situations that pull you down and make you go back. Because you know what your value is and you know where you want to go. And you know who you want to surround yourself with and you know what you want to experience and bring to the world. From there: Any situation or person that takes you away from that well-being is a waste of your time.

Likewise, having a high self-esteem allows you to save your energy by avoiding energy leaks in contact with situations or people not aligned with your worth.

5. Improve your resilience

Resilience is the ability to recover from shock, trauma or difficult situation. In some cases, some people would be tempted to end their own life, not knowing how to get back on track.

With all of my compassion for those who took action and actually ended their lives, there is often a connection between this act and self-esteem. This decision is often linked to a very low self-esteem. Indeed, the choice to take one’s own life amounts to saying to the world: “I can no longer overcome the pain that inhabits me, and since I do not see my value in this world and that I do not have become aware of what I have to bring to the world, so there is no point in living ”.

Why am I talking about all this? Because I want to introduce the notion of resilience. With high self-esteem, you develop a high resilience capacity to overcome the greatest traumas of your life. Because you know what your value is and what is your role to play on Earth.

6. Increase your intuition

Improving your self-esteem comes from accepting yourself. And part of the acceptance comes through the decrease in ego. The ego is the voice of your fears, doubts, beliefs, which prevent you from being yourself. The voice of your ego masks that of your soul: intuition.

So by working on accepting yourself and increasing your self-esteem, you will be able to distinguish these two voices and choose the one of your intuition. As you develop more and more self-esteem, you will give way more and more to your intuition instead of your ego. This allows you in the long run to increase your intuition.

7. Develop your self-confidence

Finally, “last but not least”, improving your self-esteem allows you to have a solid base to develop your self-confidence.

Indeed, there is no self-confidence without self-esteem. And beware of the “false self-confidence” that some display. Sometimes it’s a hidden lack of self-confidence. True self-confidence is based on a positive self-image, high self-love, full self-acceptance, and unwavering faith in one’s abilities.

To reach this level of self-confidence, it will be essential for you to develop your self-esteem beforehand. Because high self-esteem is the basis of self-confidence.
